How I found out about The Chosen.
It was November 2019 when I first heard about The Chosen. A few adverts started popping up on my Facebook and YouTube. I did not skip straight away for some reason, but as soon as I heard they had their own app, I did the sensible thing and proceeded no further. I had a tonne of apps taking up valuable memory space on my phone, and I was not going to clog it up with one extra for no reason.
But if this was a TV Show streaming across the internet, why was it not on Netflix? How could I watch it, and what was it actually about?
I became a Christian in 1993. Until the internet, and before Christian TV was available on satellite television, there was only one way to see Christian Content: VHS Video. One of my earlier childhood memories from the late 1970s was watching with my family Franco Zepherelli's "Jesus of Nazareth." It starred Robert Powell as Jesus, along with an all-star cast.
Now in my early 20s, seeking meaning in my life, I dug out a VHS set of the mini-series and, although it was not word-for-word from The Bible, devoured it for hours, every night for weeks, reading alongside The Gospels, to find out if these things were so. It was instrumental in building my faith in Jesus Christ.
So the idea of a tv show telling the stories of the life of Jesus through the eyes of those who met him was very intriguing, right up my alley. God had used media powerfully in my own life to bring me to Him. Could God use something like that now to continue strengthening my faith? Plus, is it the type I could watch with my family and share with friends, who might be more interested in its entertainment value than its faith content?
Then in early December, "The Shepherd" appeared on my YouTube feed. 20 minutes of something different. I could watch this on YouTube and watch it with no compulsion to download any app or to 'buy' anything.
I watched the pilot.
I watched episode 1
Met Mary, Peter and Andrew.
I was wowed by Matthew's character.
I downloaded the app.
I was hooked!
